    Altitude h = 1 + x, where x is altitude of regular tetrahedron which vertexs are centers of balls. x= sqrt(2/3).

  2. Assuming that the tetrahedron shifted to the base, yes 1+sqrt(2/3) is the answer. Or, without that shift: h = 1/2 + x + 1/2 which of course is the same. Two simple Pythagoras' will reveal the value of x.
